When the going gets hard

Let me tell you a story why it’s so important to keep going in the really hard times of your process…

My daughter has ballet classes from the age of two year old (she’s eight now, 2020). She loves dancing and the hardest thing for her to do is to sit still.

Every morning for example, she dances while putting on her clothes. To be honest, that drives me crazy sometimes. Everything she does takes a lot of extra time because of the constant dancing in between.

Every other year there’s a big show in the theater from the balletschool. She always loves working towards that show and being on stage when the moment is finally there.

It’s her wish to eventually dance on pointe shoes like a real professional ballerina. To be able to take those classes, she needs to be 12 years old.

So, every now and then I have a conversation with her about ballet. She has phases of wanting to quit her ballet classes and start doing something else. She thinks she doesn’t like it anymore and there are so many other things that interest her.

But I know my girl and I know how deep her passion for dancing is.

This girl wants to do everything and at the same time she gets bored really fast (the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree… haha).

We then talk about what she loves so much about ballet, why she thinks she wants to quit and what she really wants.

It always comes down to the same thing. She loves the shows, she loves learning the moves and she loves the idea of dancing on pointe shoes one day.

In that moment I always remember her of why it’s important to keep going. Even if you don’t like it at this moment or maybe even for a longer period of time… I always encourage her to keep taking her ballet classes.

Off course I don’t want her to quit because she’s really talented and dancing is her life, but I won’t force her. It’s her decision and she needs to see the value of keep going herself.

And I get the struggle and I get the hard times where you start thinking of quitting. I know it as no other.

But quitting will not lead you to what you really want and dream of.

The only way is to keep going.

Some phases will be ‘easy’ and some will be hard. It’s all part of the game.

Keep your vision in mind.

Learn to keep going.

Don’t give up on your dreams.
