Be an example. For yourself, your family, your team, your business, your friends and who else is in your life. It’s one of the most powerful and impactful ways to lead and create.
People don’t listen to the words you say or the instructions you give them, they listen to what they see and how you do things yourself. Children don’t listen to parents by what they say, but copy the actions that are shown to them. They are our mirrors. If you want children (and grown-ups) to listen to you, give them the right example and they will follow.
And this is not just about other people, it’s also about ourself. We can talk to ourself and say things we think we need to hear, but the only way it’s going to work is when we ACT like it. Don’t just say and think things, but DO the things that shows you how you want it to be.
It’s very important to be aware of how you show up in the world and decide how you WANT to show up. For yourself, but also for the people around you. What kind of example do you want to be? What’s important for you? And for your business?
“Be a living example and you’ll become a great leader.”
One of my living examples on this subject is my 7 year old daughter. A few weeks ago I had a conversation with her about something she really wanted. And we talked about how much effort and time was needed to make that thing happen. It almost seemed impossible.
She was so passionate about it and it really lighted her up, but she knew it wasn’t going to be a reality very soon. You know what she said? – And this was almost a speech. Give her a stage and she can do a Tedtalk about this –
She said: “Mom, nothing is impossible. You just don’t have to give up!
You can have anything you want if you don’t give up. Don’t quit and keep on going until you get there.”
And I was like… HELL YES girl! Because this is my personal mission and my vision; Create the impossible. And my girl knows that. NOT just because I’ve told her that, but because I showed her and I live like that. It’s leading by example in real life. And it works like that on every level of your life and business. Whatever you want to create.
And my daughter also knows my dream goal for our family. She also knows that that dream goal isn’t close to us right now, but that we are on a mission to get there. That spirit is so powerful and it creates an amazing bonding.
And it works exactly the same way with teams. Be on a mission together and lead by example. Watch the amazing things that will happen… 😉
My daughter is leading by example herself as well, in her ballet class. Not because she thinks she’s a leader, but because she shows up as an example and lead the other girls with her being and performance.
I have tears in my eyes when I see her doing her thing and lead the other girls by just being her. Leading by example at it’s finest… So pure and special.
So, yes! It works and it’s powerful.
Lead by example.
People don’t listen to you because you have a title or something. Being you and showing up as who you need to be is authentic, and it’s how leadership works.
What’s you’re take- away from this? What kind of leader do you want to be?
I’d love to hear it from you!
