I used to be very bad in making choices. I never ever could make a choice by myself, whatever it was about. It was often times very frustrating and it definitely caused stress.
The feeling of not being able to choose is really one of the worst frustrating feelings. Everything in your head goes back and forth, on and on… And still not coming to the point of making a decision.
Making a choice is soooooo liberating.
And that’s what it is, right? It’s about making the decision and the suffering is over. No matter what you chose.
So at one point it’s great to have different choices and options. But if there’s too many, it can come in your way.
Choices gives us a form of freedom and control. Which is basically what we all want.
But having too many choices can actually freak us out because it makes it too difficult to make a decision. There are simply too many options.
There can be lack of overview, which makes it hard to consider what you want to choose. It causes overwhelm. If you do choose, you can be less satisfied then when there were less options to choose from. There’s the feeling left of missing out on so many things.
So it’s about the right balance in the amount of choices. You want to have options, but not too many.
What helps me a lot these days in making choices is the power of YES or NO. If something is not a clear YES for me, it’s a NO. I don’t do ‘maybe’, because that’s actually not a decision. That obviously doesn’t help, haha.
A NO for me doesn’t have to mean a NO forever. Sometimes it can mean a no for now… So I don’t cut things off, but it’s not what I want to choose for now.
What’s been a NO for me in the past, are things I say YES to right now. Back then it was just a NO for now. Totally fine if you ask me.
I can tell you, that gives so much freedom!
A while ago someone asked me if that wasn’t too black or white, my YES or NO concept.
He said: “What if you had more options than just YES or NO?”
Well, my internal reaction spoke for itself. Everything in my body screamed NOOOO!
I thanked him for the suggestion, but that idea was definitely a NO for me.
And you know what? For others that might be perfect. Not everyone is the same when it comes to choices. We’re all different…
Do what works for you.
I like my YES and NO concept. It works for me, it creates clarity and freedom.
It’s great to have choices and options, but make sure you don’t have too many.
Filter out what needs to be filtered out. It makes everything a lot more simpler.
What kind of person are you when it comes to choices?
Do you know what works for you?
Or are you struggling with it?
I’d love to hear.
